Chapter Fourteen
Commander Larson did not allow Flint to sink into the murky waters of his own anguish.
âYou canât do this, sir,â she said, as close to fury as he could remember. âNot here, not now.â He felt her eyes boring into him. âNot ever.â
The sharpness of her voice cut deep and Flint turned to face her. Larsonâs words were angry, but he saw other emotions in her face and it was the disappointment which hurt the most.
âHell no,â he said. The words sounded weak and he tried again. âWeâve got this,â he said, his voice hardening. It shouldnât have surprised Flint, given everything heâd been through, but the conviction was there. âI promise weâve got this,â he growled.
Larsonâs gaze didnât waver, didnât fall. âYou canâtââ
âWhatever it takes, weâve got this,â Flint repeated.
He didnât say if this promise meant heâd carbonize Vance and the soldiers if thatâs what was necessary. In truth, he didnât know. All Flint could be sure about was that the war had brought him to this and heâd be the one whoâd carry the burden of whatever came from it.
Larson shook her head slightly. She always seemed to read him like a book. âThis is on us, sir. All of us.â
And that was it done. The fractures in Flintâs sanity healed and the man that was left was stronger than before.
âScrew these alien assholes,â said Garrett. âLetâs give them another taste of exium and see if they like it.â
âNot yet, Lieutenant,â said Flint. He felt a cold fury of his own, as if heâd sucked it clean out of Larson. Thereâd be a time to act, and it would surely come soon. âWhatâs on those Balon sensor feeds?â
âWarships and cities, sir,â said Garrett. âThe comms hub sensors have a good view of the Cadavaxâs underside, the hub compound, and not much else. The compound isâ¦crowded.â
âCan those sensors show us now much damage we inflicted on the enemy ship?â
âNo, sir, the Terrus impacts are not visible to the ground sensors.â
âLet me have a look at the compound.â
Garretâs description of crowded was an understatement. The Kilvar had landed dozens of shuttles on both sides of the perimeter walls. When theyâd run out of open ground within the walls, theyâd set down on roofs, and one smaller shuttle had even landed on top of a larger vessel. What space was left in the compound was filled with nine-foot Kilvar shock troops. Each and every one faced the same direction â that being the building under which Vance had taken refuge.
âTheyâre waiting their turn to throw themselves down the lift shaft,â said Eastwood in horror. âWhat the hell are these things?â
âTheyâre ten times worse than the Lavorix, Ken. I can tell you that for nothing,â said Burner.
âIâve seen enough of that feed for the moment,â said Flint. âShow me one of the cities.â
âHere you go, sir,â said Garrett. âThis oneâs ninety klicks directly south of the comms hub. Thereâs not much of it left.â
The Balon satellite was directly over the remains of a city and its feed quality was near-perfect.
